Atal Bhujal Yojana 2024

The current Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, launched this scheme where the aim is to solve the issue of depleting ground-level water. It was started in 2019, and it aims at covering more than 8350 villages across seven different states of India. The awareness will be done, and information will be provided regarding conserving groundwater and water safety. Along with that, institutional arrangements will be made more efficient for groundwater management. 

By the end of 2024, this scheme focuses on making safe drinking water accessible to more than 15 crores of households that fall in the target region. The Central Government of India and the World Bank shares 50-50 stake within Atal bhujal Yojana. Rs 6000 crores funds have been provided for implementing the scheme and out of which 3000 crores is provided by the Government of India and 3000 crores by the World Bank.

  • The scheme focuses on improving institutional arrangements that contribute to groundwater management. 
  • Incentives are given for good water management practices and coming up with new water security plans, implementing ongoing management practices, etc.

Key Points

  1. During the 2016-17 Union budget, the National Bhujal Water Administration Improvement Plan was first instituted. 
  2. But in 2017, this plan was discontinued and later relaunched as the Atal Bhujal Yojana.
  3. The scheme is taken care of by the Ministry of Water Sources and the Ministry of River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation.
  4. The funds supplied for this scheme are being made available to the institutions actively working towards groundwater management and promoting groundwater level.
  5. Incentives are also given for performing well towards achieving the goal of this scheme.
